An Epic Angry Birds!

Angry-Birds-Epic-featured

It makes sense that Rovio, the makers of Angry Birds, would try and expand the popularity of their hit mobile game, so them creating a turn based RPG out of the upset fowl is no surprise.  What is a surprise is how fun Angry Birds Epic is.  The birds’ unique powers lend themselves well to the format.

The game is simple, you drag the bird you want to have attack to the pig you want it to hit.  Or you tap on the bird to have it cast its protection spell.  Different birds have different attacks and protection moves, so picking what birds and moves to do gives the game its strategy.  As the game progresses you gain different weapons that tweak the moves, and items to help you get out of a tight spot.  You also level up so your birds get more powerful.

The game looks good.  It retains that charm of the Angry Birds franchise, but still looks unique.  The animations are smooth, and the characters all have fun expressions.  If you like the Angry Birds you will like the look of this game.

The “Free-To-Play” stuff kind of gets in the way by always asking you to buy the items and weapons, but it is still fun even if you ignore it all.  This game is not super deep, but it is a good way to kill a few minutes, and that is what any good cell phone game should be.

Checking Out Grim Dawn!

Grim-dawn

Waaay back in April of 2012 I back a project by Crate Entertainment called Grim Dawn.  Later they released the game on Steam Early Access, and they gave everyone who backed it a copy, which was very nice of them.  They still are not done with the game (it is only seven guys so I will cut them some slack), but since I had to stop myself from buying Diablo III for Xbox One, I figured I would give it a try.

The guys that started Crate Entertainment are the some of the guys that worked on Titian Quest, so they took their ARPG (Action Role Playing Game) know how and applied it to Grim Dawn.  Grim Dawn is now on what is called Build 19.

Like I said before this is an ARPG, and if you don’t know what that is, just think clicking on monsters until they die.  You level up and get more stuff so you can click on the monsters better.  You keep doing this until you win.  These games are simple yet fun, and after you get a few different skills, you can start to using more strategy.

Grim Dawn includes two Acts and a ton of items as well as four playable classes.  The classes are: Soldier (Fighter), Demolitionist (Ranged), Occultist (Mage), and Nightblade (Assassin).  What is cool is that at level ten you can pick a second class, so you can mix and match what skills you want to fit your desired play style.  Plus in effect it brings up the number of classes from four to sixteen.

The game takes place in an alternate Victorian era, where humans are almost extinct due to a magical war, and of course only you can destroy the evil beings and save humanity!  It is a fun setting, and I like that it allows for guns (not that I use them, I like to hit stuff on the head very hard) and slightly different loot then the average RPG.

This game is all about the loot.  There may even be too much.  Luckily they include an auto-sort button, so I am not always playing Tetris with my items.  I like that I am always finding something new though.  It keeps it interesting, and really drives the need to search out every corner of the map.

The graphics look good, especially the shadowing.  ARPGs never really push computers very hard, but this game runs well.  The animations are all top notch.  I like the over the top doom and gloom.  It really works.  It is like Diablo’s gory cousin.  Limbs and body parts explode all over the place.  It is pretty great.

Considering this game is a ways away from being finished it is amazing how fun it is already.  The two current Acts have at least ten hours of play time.  Build 20 is right around the corner with multiplayer and Act 3, so it is getting even better.  I can’t wait to have even more Grim Dawn to play.  If you want to check it out it is $25 on Steam Early Access.

BioWare’s New Game Is Shadow Realms!

BioWare-Shadow-Realms

So after days of speculation we now know what BioWare’s new game is called: Shadow Realms.  With all the houses getting sucked in to black holes and magical abilities, I was hopping that they were making a big budget Shadowrun game, but instead it is a 4 on 1 multiplayer RPG in their own universe.  Four people team up and face off against a Shadow Lord.  The Shadow Lord beyond just being super powerful, also gets to command the dungeon, so he is sort of a GM.

So really since the game takes place in the current day, and it has fantasy elements, it is lot like Shadowrun, but they are not paying Microsoft or Catalyst for the license.  The big difference is I haven’t seen anyone use guns yet.  If they add guns then this is totally a Shadowrun rip-off, and I am okay with that.  Honestly add guns and call it Shadowrun: Rise of the Shadow Lords.  I would pay all kinds of money for that game.

If this was a single player game I would be more excited.  The fact I have to find four people with to play this with all the time is a little lame, so hopefully there is a good grouping system.  We will see when it gets closer to release.

If you are interested you can sign up for the alpha here.  IGN has posted four minutes of gameplay footage, and I am reposting it for your viewing pleasure below:

BioWare Is Making A New Game!

star-wars-knights

BioWare is responsible for my favorite game of all time Knights of The Old Republic, and now they have released some live action teaser trailers for their new game.  Here they are:

They have my interest peaked!  They could be a setup for Mass Effect 4, but they don’t quite seem to fit that.  Some people have been speculating that it is some sort of superpower based RPG, which I would be totally fine with.  I guess we only have to wait a few more days until Gamescom or PAX Prime to find out!

EA Access Is A Good Start

ea_access

Yesterday EA announced a new program for Xbox One called Access.  Access will either cost you $5 a month or $30 a year, and in return for your hard earned money you will get “access” to a bunch of their older games.  In this first round you would be a able to play Madden NFL 25, Battlefield 4, Peggle 2, and Fifa 14.  Since I already own two of those games, it is not a very compelling package for me.  Though they have said they are “working” to add more very soon.  I am not sure what working means.  It must be hard to allow people to download games or something.

On top of old games they will also give early “access” to new games, but unlike normal demos your progress will transfer over to the games.  So if you are really excited about Dragon Age: Inquisition it might be enough to get you to try out the service.  You will also apparently get discounts on EA games, though I haven’t seen any specific numbers for that.  So if you really like EA’s upcoming lineup this might be the service you have been waiting for!

This seems like a no brainer move.  It allows EA to leverage their old games so that you will be more inclined to buy the DLC for those games, or use your discounts to pick up the new ones.  For now however, I don’t think the games being offered are enticing enough, and even though I love RPGs, I have never gotten in to the Dragon Age series, so I don’t really want “early access”.  Once there are more games, and a better range of titles coming out for Xbox One I might be more inclined.

I would much rather have had this come from Microsoft or Sony themselves, so it wouldn’t just be EA games, but games from all publishers as well.  They both kind of do it already with Games with Gold, and PlayStation Plus, but you only get a chance to activate those games for a month, and if you forget you miss out.  It would be much better if the games kept getting added to a pool of “free titles” instead.

EA Access seems like where the future is headed, and even though I am not swayed by the service now, it will definitely be something to watch.  Now if there was a super EA Access for $10 a month that gave me “access” to all their games and DLC, I would probably sign up.  Somehow I don’t think that is going to happen anytime soon.
