Shmee Watches Arrow!

After being frustrated with DC a couple of days ago, I thought I would give their hit show Arrow a shot since the first season is now on Netflix.  I am glad I did.  The guys and gals over at CW have done a great job with character, and I can’t wait to see what they do next.

The show follows billionaire playboy Oliver Queen as he comes home from being stranded on an uncharted island that took the lives of one of his friends and his father.  He did not come home just to return to his family, but to clean up the city his father helped destroy.

If you think that sounds a little like Batman, you would be right, and that has not been lost on comic book fans for years now.  The big difference is that Green Arrow has always been a little more left leaning and will kill people from time to time.  There are some differences between the TV Green Arrow and the comic book Green Arrow.  For one thing they changed the name of the city to Starling from Star, and Speedy is his hard partying little sister not his side kick though that my be coming.  They also don’t call him the Green Arrow a lot, and if they do it is in jest.  Probably due to the awful Green Lantern movie, and they don’t want to confuse people.

Stephen Amell is a little stiff as the Arrow but being interesting as a brooding super hero is hard, but he is getting better as time goes on.  The rest of the cast is very good, and the middle aged cast is full of great industry genre vets like, John Barrowman (Jack Harkness), Paul Blackthorne (Harry Desden), and Colin Salmon (All sorts of stuff but Dr. Moon from Dr. Who).

There is a little of the CW random teenage drama thrown in here and there, but overall it is a great super hero TV show, so it is no wonder that they found success.  Plus they have been working in all sorts of cool DC villains and heroes, so it has been fun to see who shows up.  If these are people in charge of the new Flash and Hourman TV shows than we are in for a treat.

Shmee Enjoys @Midnight!

Since I watch a lot of The Walking Dead, I also watch The Talking Dead hosted by Chris Hardwick.  On his show one of his guests mentioned that he was going to be on Chris’s other show @Midnight, and since I find Chris funny I decided to check it out.

The premise is that Chris gathers up three comedians, and they make fun of the random stuff that happens on the web and social media.  By playing silly games they get to find out who the funniest person is in the world for the next twenty-three and a half hours.  The games range from hash tag wars, where they add hash tags to random tweets to make them funnier.  To AMA Answers, where they will answer Reddit AMA questions that the person doing the AMA chose to ignore.

There is a lot of junk on the internet, so this show has a lot of material to work from, and the people they get on the show are usually pretty funny.  It can get a little to risqué sometimes, but so does the internet.  The show is as you guessed on at midnight every weeknight on Comedy Central, and it is worth checking out.

Not Ready To Give Up On S.H.I.E.L.D!

Geeks are a funny breed.  They can turn on something so quickly after they were extremely excited about it.  A few weeks ago Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D was going to be the best thing ever:  a weekly show firmly rooted in the Marvel Movie universe, but now after just three shows a lot geeks are calling it the worst thing ever.  They are the reason Firefly got canceled.

Geeky shows tend to have slow starts.  It is just a fact.  Star Trek: The Next Generation wasn’t great until season 3.  Deep Space Nine was the same way.  That is not even counting all the Joss Whedon shows.  Buffy and Angle both had slow starts, and Dollhouse wasn’t good until they decided to cancel it.  Firefly had a great one season, but the first episode wasn’t that good and its ratings never recovered (starts to weep uncontrollably).

People just need a little patience with shows, especially shows in large universes that need some time to establish who they are, and what their reason for existing is.  Nobody watched Breaking Bad at first because they didn’t get it, but thankfully AMC had nothing to run in its place, and Netflix got people interested in it again.

So no S.H.I.E.L.D has not been the best show ever in the last three weeks, but it isn’t that bad either, and I am willing to give it the time it needs to find itself.  Because I don’t want to be one of the people that gets the next Firefly or Star Trek: The Next Generation canceled.

Treehouse of Horror XXIV!

There is only one episode of the Simpsons that I can’t miss every year, and that is the Treehouse of Horror episode.  They aired the 24th episode this year, so they now have a full season’s worth of these special editions.  This year was more interesting because Guillermo Del Toro directed the opening sequence and the couch gag.

The opening sequence was by far the best part.  It managed to work every horror movie villain I could think of in to its two and a half minute runtime.  It is a shame that they didn’t have Del Toro directed the rest of the episode.

The first story was about Bart and Lisa having to share a body because Bart got his head cut off.  It was pretty funny, but it didn’t have enough jokes in it to sustain it for its full running time.

The second story where they made fun of the horror classic Freaks was much better.  It had Homer in the role of the strong man trying to destroy and kill Moe using Marge as the bait.  It was great how they turned all the Springfield crew in to the different sideshow attractions.

It was worth it just to see the opening, so to have fifty percent of the rest of the episode pay off was fine.  I can’t wait to see what they come up with next year.

Happy Little Mermaid Day!

If you are like my wife than you know that The Little Mermaid comes out on Blu-Ray today, and since we have it pre-ordered we should get it soon.  She is super excited, so I thought I would remind the rest of you that it is out.

I am more excided about Pacific Rim coming out in two weeks, but to each their own.

You can also get this killer Breaking Bad Complete Series in a barrel!  Yes in a barrel, but it doesn’t come out until the end of November, but still it is pretty sweet! I am mostly just posting this one as a Christmas idea for all you out there that love me.
