Well The Most Nervous Time Of Year Is Over!!

pax

There is one time of year I am always running on high alert.  I have my phone strapped to me at all times, and that time of year is PAX Prime ticket season.  Oh man.  The tickets sell out so fast, and it is a tradition that I go.  Even in the down years it is something to see.  Well yesterday the notification came out, and my friends and I where on the ball, so sometime in September look for our hands-on wrap up PAX Prime 2015.  They say they are making several changes this year.  We will see if they are for the better or not.  If you were able to get your tickets in the fiftyish minutes they were available maybe I will see you there!  If not, watch this trailer for Netflix’s new show made by the Wachowskis.  It might make you feel better.

Star Trek Might Be A Reality!

nasa

So something amazing happened in the last couple of days, according to the Daily Mail NASA tested an EM drive in a vacuum.  Now I know what you are saying, “That shouldn’t be possible! There is nothing for the ions to bounce off of in a vacuum to create thrust!”  I know,  I thought it was nuts to, but NASA says it has done it.  They are just waiting for a peer review.

Even if you don’t understand the physics, and trust me don’t feel bad almost no one does.  Well actually no one does because it is supposed to be impossible, but the reason this is so amazing is that these drives can be powered by radiation from the stars and propel objects near to or even faster than the speed of light.  At the current theoretical rate of travel with this drive it would only take 100 years to get to Alpha Centauri.  A long time sure, but 9,900 year less than the current method, and almost within a human’s life span.  Plus it could get us to the moon in 4.5 hours.  Crazy.

While I doubt we will be using these drives soon, or maybe not even in my lifetime, Little Shmee may be alive to see the first person leave our solar system, and that is an amazing thought.  In fact it is almost making me cry.

This Is Post 500!

500

I can’t believe that I am typing this, but my Big Hero 6 review was my 499th post!  I honestly thought that I would have given up by now, but here I am typing up post 500.  It is crazy that over 15,000 people have visited my site from almost every country in the world.  I still have a few left in Africa and Asia, and for some reason Iceland will not come and visit.  Come on Iceland I will not bite!

It has been great having The Paladin write a few posts for the blog, and he has added 14 more reviews and whatnot on top of my 500.  It is good to get a different viewpoint on here every now and then.  I am hoping that he will continue to add posts when he feels like it.

The number one post besides my front page was my Wonder Woman casting page.  It is still popular which is odd since Gal Gadot got the role about a year ago.  Maybe people just want the pictures or something.  My least viewed page was my rant about where they should go with the Star Wars franchise.  One whole person besides myself read it.  Oh well, we all know where Disney is headed now.

I would like to thank you all for coming to visit!  It has been fun sharing my thoughts on things and stuff with all of you!  I hope you will all continue to come hang out on my little corner of the internet.

The Paladin’s PAX Wrap-up

paxLike Shmee and Daniel, I too have returned from PAX Prime 2014 and lived to tell the tell. You can read their excellent wrap-ups here and here. My own experience was a little more wandering this year and like Shmee, I found the Expo Hall feeling a little less inviting than in years past. In fact it wasn’t until Sunday that I even saw the smaller hall where Arena.net, Sega, and The Behemoth were setup. Throughout the expo hall the crowds were heavy, the lines long, the atmosphere a confusing mix of sights and sounds, and the ever present pressure of the crowd giving you little time to take it all in. The exception was the 6th floor where more indie games could be found, the booths were less flashy, and the crowds were manageable – additionally the games were often unique and innovative beyond the AAA franchises and sequels of the main hall.

The diamond in the rough here was Fortified!, a pulpy ’50 Science Fiction co-op shooter/defense game that had a fantastic art direction and vibe in addition to enjoyable gameplay that ramped up in difficulty so smoothly you hardly noticed the fly saucer destroying your base atop all the other madness.

Also on the 6th floor I found something for my Christmas list, the ergonomic pillow from Glomtom. I just walked up to the booth, sat down, they told me to relax and just play after setting the pillow on my lap. Now I don’t power game like I use to, but this pillow made even the ten minutes I played Diablo III very comfortable. Plus the built in storage would be a great place for me to hide my controller from grubby children fingers.

Three exceptions to the otherwise avoidable Expo Hall were Massive Chalice, Screen Cheat, and Dreadnought. Shmee is a big fan of the studio Double Fine, so he made sure he played Massive Chalice on the show floor. I’m glad I tagged along because the game has great potential. It’s a turn based strategy game like XCOM, but then you can retire your heroes, marry them to another hero, and wait nine months for their combined genetics to make your next fighter. It’s a cool concept. Screen Cheat was in the indie booths on the main floor and brought me back to the good old days of multiplayer when you sat right next to your opponent and cheated by looking at their screen like the good Lord intended. Screen Cheat adds the wrinkle that your opponents are invisible on your screen so you have to look at their screens to know where they actually are in the world so you can hunt them down – again as the good Lord intended. The last one I didn’t actually get to play, but that was Dreadnought a multiplayer game where instead of fleet soldiers or maneuverable star fighters you command ungainly capital ships. The line grew for this game each day, so it obviously captured a lot of people’s attention (or they had good swag?).

Finally, if you are going to play one card-based action-adventure RPG make sure it’s Thornwatch. Developed by Penny Arcade’s very own Mike Krahulik you and your fellows play members of the Thornwatch deep in the Eyrewood, a vast magical forest. People call forth the Thornwatch by tying specific knots to birch trees asking for aid or protection. I was able to playtest the game on Saturday and found the experience to be super fun. The way the cards are designed it really plays into teamwork or synergy as the game calls it, meaning you’re part of the action the whole round not just your turn. The artwork and theme are fabulous as well. There’s no firm date on what it will reach the masses but you too can sign up for chances to play or stay up-to-date on the website.

Of course with a show like this there is so much to actually talk about that this post could go on forever. Instead I’ll just give you the list of honorable mentions in no particular order with links you can explore yourself: Pathfinder, Fortnite, the Valiant RPG, XCOM: The Board Game, Fantasia: Music Evolved, Slap .45, Shadow of Morder, Shadowrealm, World of Planes, Towerfall, Hero Forge, and Evolution.

This Is Not The Hot Dog Toaster You Have Been Waiting For!

ne-rs-hot-dog-taoster

The Nostalgia Electrics Retro Series Hot Dog Toaster looks to be a hot dog lover’s dream, but sadly that dream is a bit of a nightmare.  There are few things easier in this world to cook than an American Hot Dog.  I mean they are already pre-cooked.  You can, fry them, grill them, boil them (please don’t), steam them, hold them over a camp fire, wrap them around a light bulb, or just about any other heat source you can imagine, so you would think that a toaster would be up to the job, but I have found it to be lacking.

Like any toaster it is easy to operate.  Well in theory it is anyway.  You have twist dial on the side that goes from one to five to pick how long you want to cook your dogs and buns, and a leaver which you pull down to start the cooking.  There is also an emergency stop button, just in case.  So being the accomplished toaster-user that I am, I turned the dial to four and put in two hot dogs and two buns, and I pushed down the leaver.  The dogs came out undercooked.  The next two I turned the dial to five, and guess what?  It burned the crap out of them.

It is crazy to me to think that the one thing this toaster was designed to do, it would be bad at.  Sure it did indeed heat up my hot dogs, but it didn’t do a good job!  It has one reason for its existence, and it does it poorly.  I guess I could put the dogs in at five and then watch them, and then push the button when they are ready, but that defeats the purpose of a timer.  Plus it can only do two at a time, so if you are cooking dogs for friends, you would have to use something else anyway unless they like to wait while others eat.  If I had to give this toaster a classroom grade it would get a D+.  It toasted the dogs, but just barely successfully.  It gets the “+” because it looks good doing it.

Pretty much anything that heats stuff up in your kitchen or backyard is going to do a better job of cooking your hot dogs than this thing.  Sure it kind of works, but not well enough to recommend it.  It is such a shame too, because it does look cool.
