Who Should Play The Justice League Dark?

justice-league-dark

Guillermo Del Toro has been in talks with DC/Warner Brothers to do a Justice League Dark (The Justice League that deals with what goes bump in the night) movie, and if anyone is going to take Vertigo’s characters and make movie out of them it would be him.  I, being the ever helpful person that I am, thought I would cast the big five for him.

John Constantine

John_Constantine_0015

John is probably the most recognizable JLD character, since his book has been running for what seems like forever, and he is the center of the JLD.  I am going to pick Aaron Echkart.

Aaron-Eckhart

He has got the look, and we saw in the Dark Knight he has no problem bringing comic book characters to life.  I think he will also do a good job of mixing the serious with the humor that Constantine needs.  Since they are going another way with Batman now, he should be free.

Madame Xanadu

madam_xanadu

The mystic of the JLD is a good opportunity to work in some young blood.  My professional selection is Kerry Washington.

Kerry-Washington

She is such a good actor, so it is time to get her away from Scandal and on to bigger things.  I think she would have a lot of fun with this role.

Deadman

deadman

Deadman is an interesting one since he would have to be computer animated the whole time, and if you are going to do computer animation there is only one actor you need to call: Andy Serkis.

Andy-Serkis

Andy is a the best at bringing life to CG characters, and he could let his creativity run wild with the poor undead Deadman.

Shade, the Changing Man

shade_the_changing_man_001

Shade would be a good time to use an unknown actor, since he can look like just about anyone, and the public would have no pre-conceived ideas on how he should look, but my job is to cast him, so I went with Cillian Murphy.

cillian-murphy

I probably should have shied away from another Dark Knight actor, but he is so good at being moody that I couldn’t help myself.  He has proven in all his work that he would do a good job, and it would let him be the hero for once.

Zatanna

zatanna

AKA The other JLD character people might know (but still probably not).  Since she is the one that will probably save the day in this flick, I went with someone with a lot of acting experience, and I think she looks a lot like Zatanna as well.  Jennifer Connelly.

Jennifer-Connelly

My friends will probably just think I am picking her because of my long standing crush on her, but no, I think she has what it takes to play the master magician, and would provide a good anchor for this group.

This is my cast for the JLD.  I would love to hear your take on the JLD, or even what other characters you would throw in and who you would like to play them.  Like who would be Swamp Thing, or Frankenstein’s monster?  Leave a comment if you have an idea!  Shmee out.

What I Don’t and Do Want From The Fantastic Four!

Fantastic Four Logo

So Fox has cast its new Fantastic Four film with Michael B. Jordan as The Human Torch, Kate Mara as The Invisible Woman, Miles Teller as Mr. Fantastic, and Jamie Bell as The Thing. It is obvious they are going for a younger crowd with this movie, and that is fine, but I do have some thoughts on how to make their movie better.

I Don’t Want Another Origin Story!

Please don’t make me see these kids hit by gamma radiation, and then learn how to be super heroes.  We have seen that like a hundred times now.  It would be fun to just have a movie about the Fantastic Four and their amazing adventures.

I Do Want X-Men Crossovers!

If Fox is going to hold on to both the Fantastic Four and X-Men it would be wonderful if they would show up in each other’s movies.  Create the Fox-Marvel universe.  It would be awesome to have Mr. Fantastic ask for advice from Professor X!  Plus any movie is better with Patrick Stewart.

I Don’t Want Anymore Moping!

If any set of superheroes loves their powers it is the Fantastic Four.  Sure The Thing has some love-life issues, but it would be great to have some heroes not weighed down by the “burden” of their amazing powers.

I Do Want Some Clobbering Time!

The Thing is supposed to be able to go toe to toe with the Hulk, so I want to see him just destroy some stuff.  Maybe like a whole Army base or something.  The Thing can literally make or break this film.

I Don’t Want The Characters To Be Dumb!

These guys are super scientists for crying out loud!  Please let them make good choices, and at least act like the super smart people they are.  Sure Johnny Storm can be a little dumb at times, but the Fantastic Four as a group should be pretty keen.

I Do Want Another Bad Guy Besides Dr. Doom!

Dr. Doom will no doubt be in this movie, but I really am not his biggest fan, so I am hopping that they bring in someone else.  I know Marvel is keeping all the best bad guys for themselves, but there are still a bunch of good ones to choose from like Devos the Devastator who wants to bring “peace” to the universe.

That is my basic list, but I would have to say my biggest want is for this just to be a good movie.  The last Fantastic Four movies at their best were forgettable, so it would be a nice change of pace for this new movie to not be terrible.  Do you guys have anything you want to see from this new F4 film?

Who Should Play Ms. Marvel?

captain-marvel-carol-danvers-1

With the exciting news that news that Ms. Marvel is going to be in the next Avengers movie a lot of people have been asking me who I think should play Carol Danvers.  Fox already has two of my top picks under contract for super heroes with Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence.  Ironically they both play the same character Mystique separated by time.  The current internet favorite is Katee Sackhoff, but I am not sold, so here are my five alternates in reverse order.

5: Yvonne Strahovski

I mostly chose her because she has the look, but she has had a lot of practice playing a hero thanks to Chuck.

4: Ali Larter

ali-larter

Again she is another “got the look” choice, but in TV show Heroes she was really good at giving that I am going to kill you look that would suit Ms. Marvel very well.

3: Emily Blunt

emily-blunt

She would need some hair dye, but she is talented actress who could hold her own against the growing number of leading men in the Avengers film.

2: Claire Danes

Claire-Danes

She might be busy with Homeland, but ever since the underappreciated movie Stardust, I have been wanting to see her breakout in movies.  She has the acting chops to really bring Ms. Marvel to life.

1: Anna Trov

anna-torv

The Fringe star has the ability to kick butt and dish one liners with the best of them.  She will never get picked because she is too perfect for the role, but if they did, I would be one happy Shmee.

Movie studios never seem to like my casting choices, but I will keep offering my advice anyway!  Do you guys or gals have any favorites to play the current Captain Marvel?

The Lego Movie Builds Fun!

legomovie-thumb

When I first heard they were making a Lego movie I was not that interested, but then they put together one of the best marketing campaigns in recent memory, and I became very excited about it.  I am happy to say that the movie lives up to the commercials.  Warner Brothers has done an amazing job bringing the Lego Universe to life.

The story is about an unremarkable Lego man named Emmet (Chris Pratt).  Who one day after his job at a construction site finds a special Lego piece, and he is informed by Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) that he is the one that will save the world from the Evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell).  His adventure will introduce him to several master builders including most of the Justice League.

This movie is pretty much what happens when you take the Matrix and Toy Story 2 and smash them together, and then tell the story using Legos.  That being said the beauty of this film is how many jokes they cram in to it.  It is like they are firing them out of a machine gun.  Even if all the jokes don’t land, and some of them do miss, there will be another one in few seconds.  This movie never slows down.  Which makes it good for kids and adults alike.

They really picked their voice talent well.  Chris Pratt and Elizabeth Banks play the leads well, but the best part is all the great actors they got for the side characters like Will Arnett as Batman and Alison Brie as Uni-Kitty.  They even have the Oscar nominated Jonah Hill as the Green Lantern who has some of the best jokes in the movie, at least for comic book lovers like myself.

The animation looks great.  It looks like a living world made out of Lego bricks, and they have so many little side gags and random things thrown in all over the place that this movie may be worth a second viewing.  The set designers really deserve a hand for all their creativity.

This movie could have simply been a commercial for Legos, but instead they put the work in to make it a movie worth watching.  They were rewarded for their hard work with earning almost 70 Million dollars in ticket sales this weekend, and I hope it sends a message to movie producers that not all good movies have come out in the summer.  They can do well in the cooler months too.

This is one of the better February movie releases in recent memory, and it made me laugh and smile the whole way through.  This a is a perfect pick-me-up for the winter gloom.  This movie is great for viewers of all ages, so it is a family movie that truly the whole family can enjoy.

We Are Finally Getting A Ms. Marvel!

ms-marvel

There was some big news yesterday as it was announced that Paul Bettany would be playing The Vision in the new Avengers movie.  Since Bettany already plays the voice of JARVIS (Tony Stark’s AI butler) in the in the Marvel Movie Universe, it seems to point to the fact that Tony Stark not Henry Pym (Ant Man) will create the evil android Ultron, and in return Ultron will use Stark’s loyal companion against him.  At least at first if they follow the comics at all.

While that is all very cool news, and interesting to think about.  People seem to missing the even bigger news as the Latino Review pointed out, they are casting for Ms. Marvel (though he says Miss Marvel)!  It is about time Marvel finally brought a top tier female crime fighter in to the mix.  As a matter of fact Ms. Marvel is probably more powerful than the rest of the Avengers combined, so this version of Ultron is going to be one bad dude.

I mean no disrespect to Scarlett Johansson, but the Black Widow would be as useful in a fight against Ultron as a guy with toothpick versus a bunch of samurai with katanas, so to have the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Ms. Marvel will let the ladies show up to the fight in force.  With the amount of firepower Marvel is packing in to this movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron may be the biggest movie of all time.
